This was the LAST reunion rental at camp

At a board meeting held on June 8, it was agreed that this will be the LAST organized reunion rental at camp under the current leadership. Interest has waned, and the amount of work that goes into organizing these rentals is overwhelming. Therefore, this was the LAST reunion to be planned by the current leadership.

A Wonderful Camp Waupaca Tale . . .

The following is a true story about lifeling camp friendship, submitted by Paul Ringel (1961-1970):

"About one month ago (July, 2019), two eternal camp friends demonstrated the meaning of “forever and forever Waupaca!”.

"My brother Marc Ringel (1958-1966) and Jeff Denenberg (1960-1966), who have maintained a very close friendship (begun at Camp Waupaca) for about 60 years, found themselves almost next door to each other in Rochester, MN at The Mayo Clinic. Jeff has had end stage kidney disease for a good while, and it has necessitated hemodialysis three days per week for ~three hours per session; as a physician with numerous similar patients I know that both the dialysis lifestyle and side effects are intrusive at minimum, and frequently onerous. The ideal solution to this problem is kidney transplantation, but as is commonly known via the press, the number of people needing kidneys (and all organs) exceeds the supply by many orders of magnitude.

"Marc knew very well of Jeff’s plight, as well as his multiple unsuccessful attempts to find a medical center that was willing to consider his candidacy as an “older” patient. So Marc, being the incredible mensch that he is (this is just a statement of fact; I’m not biased in his favor as his brother-- he used to and can STILL kick my ass), stepped up and offered one of his kidneys-- it turns out that they were a good match so The Mayo Clinic (after extensive testing) decided to proceed with the transplantation. It was a resounding success-- Marc was immediately back to his usual lifestyle, and Jeff is off of dialysis, peeing quite well, and from what I understand feeling more dandy than he has in years. (Note: I checked with Marc & Jeff who were fine with disseminating this info, though Jeff wanted to and did ask his new kidney if it was okay to go public).

"Marc* and Jeff were not “Honor Boys” very often, so there is hope for most of us run-of-the-mill campers to maintain or create incredible friendships, and perform mitzvahs!

"(*Marc did win The Dave Weiner Award in 1960, and both were Braves; this does not, however, detract from my last statement above)."

Paul Ringel (1961-1970)

Board of Directors News

On Saturday August 13, at the horseshoe around a campfire, your Board of Directors met to conduct the annual meeting of the Camp Waupaca Reunion Group. Of note: 1) The Board agreed to add a business network page to our most power equipped website. Send us a business card and we will add it to this new page. 2) The Board unanimously agreed to name Dick Garb as an honorary board member. Dick is very active behind the scenes of our group, putting us in contact with many alumni not already on our list, or alerting us to a passing. Along with his complete support for our efforts, we felt it was finally time to name Dick to our board in an honorary position. Congratulations, Dick Garb, and thank you for your endless contributions to our cause! 3) Discussions about future reunions were held. It was suggested that a handful of financially able alumni underwrite the next reunion, and we invite members to attend for free and just contribute what they felt the weekend was worth. This will require further board consideration.

Coming Soon . . .

Watch for some reunion pictures, the official time capsule, an updated Board of Directors page, reunion hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts for sale, and the new business networking page!

Titanic

November 20, 2014: From your webmaster: At our last on-site reunion in 2011, someone mentioned to me that the lyrics we were singing for the Titanic song were wrong. "Oh?" I replied. Seems there is a non-rhyming phrase in the first verse. The way we had been singing it for decades was:

Oh they built the ship Titanic to sail the ocean blue,
And they thought they had a ship that the waves would never go through.
But the Lord's almighty hand said the ship would never float.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

The corrected lyrics, or so I was told at the time, should be:

Oh they built the ship Titanic to sail the ocean blue,
And they thought they had a ship that the waves would never go through.
But the Lord's almighty hand said the ship would never stand.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

There is no explanation why this is hitting me now. Most likely it has to do with the 12" of snow that Jimmy Feinstein and I received last week here in Minnesota. Paul Warshauer, also in Minnesota, didn't get as much, so we have no sympathy for him. The wintry weather obviously got me thinking about Camp Waupaca, and this is what has been bothering me.

I did a little research to see if this suggested lyric change was appropriate. To my shock, there are lots of different lyrics for the Titanic song. Some match ours somewhat, and there are verses I never even heard of! To point out the vast variation of verses, here are a couple of links you can look at to see what other interpretations of the Titanic song are: GIRL SCOUT VERSION, and: BOY SCOUT VERSION, or: YET ANOTHER VERSION.

As you can see, there are many different versions of the Titanic song lyrics. When I first started my research, I was going to make a recommendation to the group that we modify our lyrics to keep good poetic rhyming form. However, in light of this research and discovery of no-two-lyrics-are-the-same, I am recommending that we keep our lyrics just as we have been singing them for decades, with no modification:

Oh, they built the ship Titanic to sail the ocean blue,
And they thought they had a ship that the waves would never go through.
But the Lord's almighty hand said the ship would never float.
It was sad when the great ship went down!

Oh, the ship was full of sin and the sides about to burst,
When the captain shouted "Women and children first!"
So they tried to send a wire but the lines were all on fire.
It was sad when the great ship went down! (chorus)

(chorus) Oh, it was sad! Oh, it was sad!
It was sad when the great ship went down to the bottom of the . . .
Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives.
(Alt: Uncles and aunts, little kiddies lost their pants.)
It was sad when the great ship went down!

Oh, they threw the life boats out o'er the deep and raging sea,
When the band struck up with "Nearer My God to Thee."
Little children screamed and cried as the waves swept overside.
It was sad when the great ship went down! (chorus)

Oh, they sailed from England and were almost to the shore,
When the rich refused to associate with the poor.
So they put them down below where they were the first to go.
It was sad when the great ship went down! (chorus)

Oh, the moral of the story, as you can plainly see,
Is to wear a life preserver on the dark and raging sea.
The Titanic never made it and never more shall be.
It was sad when the great ship went down! (chorus)

September 30, 2014It is with deep sadness that we annonce the death of Lillian Desnet, wife of late camp director Manny Desnet. "Mama Lill" as she came to be known around camp, shlepped 4 daughters to camp for many years. From the entire Camp Waupaca Reunion Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ellen, Marla, Nancy, and Beth. Funeral is Tuesday September 30 at 2:30 PM. All information can be viewed by CLICKING HERE. Please leave a message on the guest book by CLICKING HERE.

End of an Era

With the passing of Lill Desnet, we have come to the end of a glorious era. From Irving "Skipper" & Loretta Kuklin, Joe & Mae Rosen, and Manny & Lill Desnet, these men (and their wives) who had the vision to start and continue a summer camp for boys have left a lasting legacy which we continue today and for hopefully years and decades to come. Just a few weeks ago, a group of 8 alumni ate lunch at the top of the waterfront at Lake Stratton, where we discussed our wonderful days at camp, and recalled the impact these people had on our lives. We continue in their memory and their spirit the legacy they created. Forever and forever, Waupaca!!

Annual Reunion in Waupaca - Aug 15-17!

The dates for our annual trek to Waupaca (not camp, however) have been set! We will gather in Waupaca from Friday August 15 through Sunday August 17. During this visit, we will conduct our annual meeting, in accordance with the laws of the State of Illinios. Come for a day or a night or the whole weekend, we would love to see you!

May, 2014The Weather at Camp - a Remembrance by Mike Lurie. It was 85 degrees in Minnesota yesterday. An absolutely beautiful day if you don't mind heat and humidity. You could feel it in the air, that storms were brewing for the night. Luckily no severe weather occurred, just garden variety thundershowers. When I went outside this morning, it was very cool and breezy, and I immediately remembered those days at Camp Waupaca, when a warm to hot day was followed by a cool, breezy day. We would put away the shorts and grab our jeans and sweatshirts.

Gathering at the flagpole in the morning was challenging on those days. We would be huddled together as if it was -20. We would groan if any cabin had a long, elaborate cabin report. In the dining hall, the windows would be closed, maybe there would be a fire in the fireplace if Wayne Towne felt the urge. Suddenly the hot oatmeal or farina sounded good.

We would go out to competition still bundled up. First hour class, if it was at the waterfront, would be torture, as Warren Metzdorff insisted the boys go into Stratton Lake. Actually, the water was so warm, it felt good. Getting out, on the other hand, did not feel so good! Suddenly "wind chill" took on a whole new meaning.

By lunchtime, the skies were bright, the winds were subsiding, and it actually felt kind of warm. By the time 3rd hour came around after the state mandated rest hour, we were back in shorts and t-shirts, forgetting about our frigid morning.

Oh how I miss those days! I would trade my day job for anything, if it meant I could spend 2 summer months in a cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. At Camp Waupaca would be even better. Until that day occurs, I still have my memories, like the one shared here, to keep me going.

May, 2014The Week Before Camp. Our beloved Bob Mowen asked us what would be happening during the week leading up to the buses arriving at camp. We put our collective thoughts together and came up with the following, from the 1970s and 1980s. Any counselors from the 1950s and 1960s who care to weigh in, please write up something and we will post it right here!

Let's see, Tuesday before the buses was always the first official meeting day for the counselors. Some Chicago area counselors would meet at Camp Director Manny Desnet's house to load their cars with a summer's worth of softballs, arrows, ammunition, lifejackets, etc, before heading out on Highway 41 towards Waupaca. Any counselor under contract would be required to be in camp by 5 PM for dinner. The first night, after dinner, Manny would start the season off with his motivational and instructional speeches. Paul Warshauer could do a better Manny speech than Manny, so he would imitate Manny and give this speech to the assemblage: "Men, there is a building in town with bars on the windows . . .". Warren Metzdorff (waterfront director) and Ron Lavine (program director) would be fighting over resources for their various areas for the week. Warren would also want to move something somewhere where it shouldn't be, without Manny's permission. Paul would be scoring points with the new counselors and creating his own little fiefdom. Wayne Towne would be checking out the tents, and telling Manny the Blue Bus needs a repair. Ron would be teaching someone how to referee CW Rugby, which has no semblance of real Rugby. Mike Euer (assistant camp director) would be putting up his TV antenna and mixing the first martinis of the summer, labeling them as "Poison, photo chemicals". Manny would have a team of people to paint something white and something else brown. Counselors would be jockeying for their bunks in the cabins. Andrea Wanty (kitchen director) would be complaining about the condition of the kitchen, which hasn't changed since 1951. One of the new counselors would not heed Manny's speech about the building with bars on the windows, and would have to be bailed out of jail. Each evening leading up to the first day of camp, the new counselors would be schooled by the veteran counselors about the local watering holes in town.

On the Thursday or Friday before the campers arrived, a big semi truck from Marc's Trucking (our own Marc Margolies) would show up at camp, with 150 trunks and 150 duffel bags to be unloaded, sorted, and delivered to the cabins. The Saturday afternoon before the buses arrive, a team of counselors would trek to Chicago in Manny's Ford station wagon to ride the buses up the next day. Manny would put them up at a local motel in Skokie or Lincolnwood. Sunday morning, Manny would pick up the counselors who will ride the buses, and head to Old Orchard shopping center, outside the Montgomery Wards store, and get set up for the arrival of anxious campers and thrilled parents. There is always one camper arriving late, holding up the buses from leaving and heading to camp. Eventually the buses get started for the 3.5 hour ride to Camelot.

04/05/2014We learned this past week of the passing of Bernie Cohen. Bernie was one of two silent partners with managing director Manny Desnet. Bernie would visit camp once or twice a summer, and was usually at the busses in Old Orchard to greet parents and see the boys off to Waupaca. Our condolences to his wife Lois and the rest of his family. You can read the obituary HERE. And to leave a message, click on this link HERE.

07/2013Our annual trek to Waupaca will be Friday August 16 - Sunday August 18. We will hold our annual meeting on Saturday August 17, 3:00 PM. A full itinerary of our weekend is listed below. May, 2013Our beloved Bob Mowen has penned one of the greatest remembrances of life at Camp Waupaca. With a little literary license by permssion of the author, we present to you the following:

"Camp Waupaca was special. This time of year, every sound and smell has the distinct possibility to bring up a warm memory of my time at Camp. The memories seem endless, but here is what I miss: mealtimes, camp singing, special events, camp bus, the warm summer sun, raging thunderstorms, free swim, cabin night, night out, staff day off, mail, Wheel House, Waupaca, Amherst Bowl, the Rosa Theater, Wisconsin River, Appleton, JR's Tru Value, rest hour, Stratton Lake Road, sunset over Little Stratton, camp cooks, kitchen girls, the Dells and Tommy Bartlett, Rural and the Crystal River, the campers, the smell of the urinals, horseshoe, the staff, bug juice, bubble gum sandwiches, canteen, the Rec Hall, camp nurses, Trails End Yearbook, the State of Wisconsin, the Final Camp Banquet, the busses from Chicago (I still hate the end of summer busses TO Chicago), pre-camp, 4th of July, rainy days (to some extent), and most of all I miss Manny Desnet. I also miss a younger version of Bob Mowen.

"But time passes on. Manny Desnet has passed away. So has Bill Wanty, Terry Rifkin, and the entire Clotiaux family. During camp, we lost Penguin Chavin, Jon Reder, Scott Diamond and others. The campers have forgotten about us, but we remember the departed, and we remember the campers. In our memories the Camelot that Was Camp Waupaca remains alive, and still come our way in June, July, and August. But the years are taking their endless toll on our bodies, on our lives, and if we are lucky, NOT on our memories.

"Think about how long we were on this ride, and when compared to the ride others have taken, our ride lasted way longer with memories so deep we will die with them etched into our hearts. If not for Camp Waupaca, none of us would have ever meant so much in some regards, and despite the end of Camp Waupaca, we have had the best ride of all. Thanks to all campers, staff, and administration for the best time of our lives.

THOSE SUMMERS WERE OURS!"

02/2013It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the death of our beloved members Bob Krohn, Steve Kuklin, and Allen Schaeffer. As an 11 year old boy in 1970, though these 3 people were no longer a part of Camp Waupaca, their names were larger than life. Our reunion group was thrilled to have Steve and Allen visit us at our reunions. We were in contact with Bob and Sue Krohn for many years, but as they, too, were running a vibrant summer camp, they were unable to attend our reunion events.

Please click on these pages to read a bit about them. We hope to include photos and/or video clips of these people at some time in the future. Where an online guestbook is linked, please leave a message for the family and friends.

Bob Krohn
Steve Kuklin
Allen Schaeffer

We respect Camp Young Judaea's (the owner) desire to maintain safety and security for their campers and staff, and to maintain a program uninterrupted by unwanted visits from outsiders. Thank you for your cooperation. Here is the itinerary for this summers' event:

06/16/2012 - More sad news: We recently learned that Craig Clotiaux has also passed away. Craig was the son of the late Rosemary & Leroy Clotiaux, and brother of the late Chris Clotiaux. It is hard to comprehend how they are all gone now. Our condolences to Chris' widow, Patty.

RIP Rosemary Clotiaux (1927-2012)

04/22/2012 - Sad news to report: The Camp Waupaca Reunion Group is very sad to report the death of camp nurse Rosemary Clotiaux (1969-1979). Rosemary, along with sons Craig and Chris, were staples at camp through most of the 1970s. Rosemary's husband Leroy would "man the gate" on parent's day to keep overly eager parents from coming into camp too early on parents visiting day. We extend our condolences to Craig Clotiaux and the family of the late Chris Clotiaux on Rosemary's passing. We are so very glad to have seen Rosemary at our last reunionin Waupaca in 2011. The obituary for Rosemary can be found by CLICKING HERE. Please consider leaving a word of condolence on the Guest Book by CLICKING HERE. Rosemary is pictured here at a reunion in Waupaca in 2001, and again in 2011 next to Susi Stoffel-Lewis.

The Dave Weiner Award was presented posthumously to David Wax, with permission of the benefactor. CLICK HERE for details!!

11/13/2011 - Sad news to report: The Camp Waupaca Reunion Group extends its condolences to the family of Don Garrett (Gerowitz) (1961-1965) who passed away. Don was the brother of our member Rob Gerowitz. The obituary for Don can be found by CLICKING HERE. Please consider leaving a word of condolence on the Guest Book by CLICKING HERE. 07/03/2009 - CHICAGO, IL - Sad news to report: Sandy Takiff, one of the original campers of Camp Waupaca For Boys in 1951, has passed away. His obituary can be found HERE. To visit the guest book and leave a message, click HERE. If you were at camp in the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s, you may remember seeing an article about camp's first year pasted on the wall. The article mentions Sandy by name as being one of the very first CIT's! We recently discovered this article by visiting the Waupaca Publishing Company. Sandy attended a Chicago area reunion in May of 2003.

12/09/2008 - ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL - Ray Krysh, a counselor from 1972 - 1985, has passed away from complications of lung cancer. Ray was most often found in the CIT Village with his dog Sundance. CLICK HERE to sign the guestbook for the Krysh family.

09/07/2008 - CHICAGO, IL - The mother of campers Don Gerowitz (1961-1965) and Rob Gerowitz (1964-1979) has passed away. 08/22/2008 - CHICAGO, IL - We learned this afternoon of the passing of Loretta Kuklin, widow of the late Irving "Skipper" Kuklin, the original builder and director of Camp Waupaca For Boys. Loretta passed away Thursday evening, August 21. She would have been 94 on September 1. Loretta is survived by daughter Judy Kuklin-Roseman and son Steve Kuklin. The entire Camp Waupaca Reunion Group extends its' condolences to Judy, Steve, and the extended family.

08/18/2008 - Paul Warshauer a no-show in Waupaca - attendees initiate name banishment proceedings.

(submitted in jest by the reunion attendees)

WAUPACA, WI - Seven Camp Waupaca alumni gathered in Waupaca this weekend to revel and reminisce in the town of their youth. Notably missing from the gathering was Paul Warshauer. A last minute pull-out, Paul contacted members as early as Thursday afternoon that he would not be attending, but told others as late as Friday morning that he was in Minnesota and would join the group Saturday. When contacted at his residence in Grand Island, NE, Warshauer said he was "attending to contracts and other important business".

The group gathered at popular tourist attractions in Waupaca such as Simpson's Indian Room Restaurant, Clearwater Harbor, JR's Sportsman's Bar, Wheelhouse, King's Table restaurant, and an "establishment" near the Waupaca International Airport. During the weekend, the group took a dim view of Warshauer's absence, and prepared the following statement in an effort to tarnish his good name.

Imagine Warren Metzdorff dressed as the Pharoah Seti, played by Sir Cedric Hardwicke, in the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille classic production of “The Ten Commandments” as he declares:

Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every pylon and obelisk.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every cabin wall and ceiling.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every yearbook.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every bathroom.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every CIT cabin.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every web page.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from every commemorative plaque.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from the Archery Range.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from the Buddy Tag board.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” be removed from the Larry Craig stall at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport.
Let the name “Paul Warshauer” not be spoken by any Camp Waupaca alumnus, lest they be banned from all reunion activities.

So let it be written, so let it be done!!

06/29/2008 - Sad news: Wife of Abba Leifer dies. Synonymous with the early days of Camp Waupaca in the 1950s was Abba Leifer and his squeezebox playing songs at the Old Rosen Bowl, Rec Hall, and Dining Hall. His beloved wife, Eleanor Hope, passed away. CLICK HERE to see the obituary. And will someone who fondly remembers Abba Leifer please sign the guestbook on behalf of Camp Waupaca?

Mike is on the left, Todd is on the right, and Paul Warshauer is on the phone!

08/07/2005 - Choose-up Softball, in Chicago! A very close choose-up softball game was held on Sunday August 7. In attendance were: Don Feinstein, Dick Garb, Don Kaplan, David Kerstein, Dave Korman, Jeff Korman, Larry Lifson, Mike Lurie, Larry Rosen, and Glen Spear. Captains were Michael Lifson and Adam Lurie. There were plenty of triples that were legged into singles! And many creaking bones were heard rounding the bases! Spectacular catches were made, and even a grand slam or two dribbled out of the infield as well. Lots of reminiscing took place, and excitement over the upcoming visit to camp!

From Marc: "Baseball, schmaseball. The steaks were to die for (in at least two senses of that verb)."

From Harlan: "I have nothing to hide except I am middle aged, fat, like baseball, and know the Ringel brothers."

July, 2005 - Tough "Break" for Bob Mowen. As if packing up his mother's house wasn't difficult enough, Bob Mowen (1965-1988 but "was to have come in 1960") broke his wrist in the process. "Rick Passman, Kenny Saunders, Paul Warshauer, Danny Wanty and Corey Kramer all enter the annals of the 9th annual Camp Waupaca reunion. Warren Metzdorff and Dan Lyon receive honorable mention. Does this make Warshauer the winner at 9 straight summer reunions on site?
Highlights: Lunch with current CYJ Director Stephan and extended "Tour of Camp." Sad sight of a giant event tent where old Rec Hall stood. They claim ground breaking will occur in October. Passman and Warshauer snagged two more bricks from the old Rec Hall. Saturday we had great visit to Stevens Point "Corn on the Curb" event. Sunday a trip on the Lady of the Lake(?) for tour of the entire Chain of Lakes. Private tour of the Indian Crossing Casino and discussion of 2006 reunion concert.
Think of this: A 2006 Camp Waupaca Reunion would be the 10th anniversary of our great first reunion and the 18th (Chai) of the closing of Camp Waupaca. Anyone interested in a "league sanctioned reunion?" (For Ricky Goldman)
Strange: At dinner Monday night after returning from Waupaca, at Boston Market, Jon Gordon was in line and asked if I was Paul Warshauer! Coincidence? I don't think so. We chatted for an hour about camp. He looks great and is coaching track and marathon teams. I will send his info later.

(08/26/2003) For the 8th year in a row, Paul Warshauer and Mike Lurie will trek to Waupaca to reminisce about their years at camp.  The dates of attendance will be Wednesday August 27 through Sunday August 31.  They will dine at Simpsons Indian Room restaurant on either Thursday or Friday evening (they ran into Paul Ringel one year at the restaurant by chance!)  Come on up and find us as we frollick in Waupaca and surrounding areas, we'll have a good old time!  Also expected to attend is Rick Passman.

(07/2003) The Reunion Group has learned that Nate Greenberg has passed away this past February.  Nate was Skipper Kuklin's partner after Joe Rosen sold his share of the camp in 1961.

(05/29/2003) A mini-reunion was held on Thurday May 29 at Pete Miller's in Evanston.  We continue to be amazed at the alumni, new and old, who turn out to relive those old Camp Waupaca memories.  In attendance at this reunion were: Jeremy Baskin, Bob Echales, Don Kaplan, Jeff Korman, Mike Lurie, Dan Lyon, Gary Silbar, Sandy Takiff, Paul Warshauer, and David Wax.  Sandy regaled us with stories from the early days in 1951.  Sandy's name and picture appeared in an article in the 1951 Waupaca County Post.  Thank You to all who joined us!

(05/22/2003) It is with deep and profound sadness that we inform our members of the death of Joe Rosen, original founder of Camp Waupaca along with Skipper Kuklin.  Joe was SKipper's partner from 1951 to 1961.  Joe was in attandenace at the 50th Reunion in 2001.  From everyone at Camp Waupaca, we extend our sincere condolences to the entire Rosen family.

(02/2002) The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City had a Camp Waupaca connection!  Casey FitzRandolph, who won the gold medal in the 500 meter speedskating event, is the son of Jeff FitzRandolph who was a counselor in 1970.  I bet that gold medal can't come close to the quality of the medals that were handed out during the Camp Waupaca olympics!  Congratulations to Casey and father Jeff on this terrific achievement!!

(02/2002) The reunion group extends its' condolences to John Torschen and his family on the recent death of his beloved Mother.  May her memory be a blessing.

(05/02/2001) Thank you to Harlan Rips for his VERY generous financial donation.

(04/13/2001) Several cabin photos from 1981 were added today.  CLICK HERE to check them out!

(04/02/2001) We are excited to add several cabin(?) photos from 1958.  These come to us from Joe Rosen.  We're not sure of the cabin numbers, or if these are even representations of cabins.  Other cabin photos from this era are usually taken near a cabin, which is why we're unsure of these photos.  Please check them out and tell us about them!  Click here to go immediately to the 1958 photo page.

(04/02/2001) We have added cabin photos from 1974.  These photos are of poor quality.  They were taken NOT from the camp photographers' photos, but from snapshots taken simultaneously with the photographer.  We will gladly accept your replacement originals!  Click here to go immediately to the 1974 photo page.

(03/26/2001) Several cabin photos from 1972 have been added.  These new photos are courtesy of Ron Lavine.  These photos have the new "hot spot" feature built-in - place your mouse-pointer over a face, then look in the lower left comments area of yor browser for the row and position number, and the name.

(03/06/2001) Thank you to Rick Passman for painstakingly going through the photos to identify names of CW alumni.  I think he's having fun doing it!

(03/06/2001) Donations have been received from: Mike Lurie, Rick Passman, and Joe Rosen.  We will need more funds for some future mailings regarding the big reunion.

(02/18/2001) The Camp Waupaca Reunion Group would like to extend it's condolences to Pete Jocketty (counselor, 1970) on the death of his father, Joe Jocketty.  Pete's brother, Walt Jocketty, is general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

(02/2001) Congratulations to Gary Silbar and his wife Karen on the birth of Max, who weighed in at 7 pounds 7 ounces.

(02/2001) MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO PICTURE PAGES!!  We are in the process of placing a web "hot spot" on EVERY face in EVERY all-camp and cabin photo!  Place your mouse pointer over a face, and in the browser comments box (lower left on most browsers), the name of the person will appear!  It will also indicate the row and position number WHICH YOU SHOULD REFERENCE WHEN CORRESPONDING UPDATES TO US.  We also changed the way the picture pages open.  Instead of sharing the screen with the links pane on the left, we will now open these pictures in full-screen mode.  This will make browsing these larger photos easier for you.

(02/2001) HELP!!  We need your help in identifying faces and cabin numbers from the 1950's and 1960s.  Please go to the Photo Archives page and surf through the pictures.  Then you can use the handy email form to send us updates.  Be sure to identify the row as we have identified it, and where the person is (i.e. "3rd row from top, the schlamiel with glasses between Harvey Schwartz and Morrie Goldstein is Melvin Birnbaum").  This information is important for our 50th anniversary edition of the camp yearbook, the Trail's End.  Thank you for your help.

(02/2001) Congratulations to Warren Metzdorff on his recent wedding!  We're still waiting for our invitations . . .

(08/2000) Our Dream (click here)

(08/2000) Our trip to Chicago is complete!  During our visit, we met with the following alumni: Marty Behn, Dick Garb, Jon Juron, Jeff Korman, Loretta Kuklin, Steve Levin, Dan Lyon, Warren Metzdorff, Steve Prebish, Terry Rifkin, Paul Ringel, Joe Rosen, Paul Rosengarten, Ken Saunders, Gary Silbar, Wayne Towne, and David Wax.  There is SO MUCH memorabilia to scan and process, it will take WEEKS to get it all assembled!  Check back here often for the latest updates.  For now, check the 1967 and 1968 cabin photos.

(08/2000) The reunion group extends best wishes for a speedy recovery to Warren Metzdorff who recently underwent double knee replacement surgery.  Warren thinks it was the stress of "teaching 10,000 campers to swim & ski" at camp.  We think it was brought on by him teaching horseback riding in his early camp days.  We hope Warren will be back in the saddle soon!

(07/2000) Donations have been received from: Howard Bramson, Ira Fierstein, Jeff FitzRandolph, Lee Freedman, Maxine & Bob Greenstein, Larry Lazarus, Larry Lifson, Bob Mowen, Paul Ringel, Larry Silton, Glen Spear, Steve Taslitz, and Rob Tepperman.  Thank you for your support!

(07/2000) Joe Rosen has sent us much memorabilia which we are loading up.  Check 1954 and see the August 8, 1954 edition of the "Waupaca Warrior" camp newspaper!  Thank you Joe!

(07/2000) The all-camp photos, along with some cabin photos, from 1963 to 1967 are online!  The all-camp photos are annotated with names (best guess).  Anyway, check them out, and send us updates.  Our thanks to Dick Garb, Larry Lifson, Steve Levin, Rick Passman, and Paul Warshauer who have already checked them out and made a couple of corrections.

(06/2000) The Reunion Group extends its' condolences to the family of Howard Feinstein.  Howard passed away recently after a battle with lung cancer.  Howard attended camp in 1951 or 1952 (he could never remember!) and then sent his three sons to camp: Joel, Jim, and Gregg Feinstein.

(06/2000) Congratulations to Jim Feinstein who recently got married.

(06/2000) Congratulations to Greg Berke on his engagement.

(06/2000) John Rosenberg (Omaha camper) has provided the reunion group his all-camp and cabin photos from 1963 - 1967.  John lives in Minneapolis with his wife and two children.  He is a pilot for Northwest Airlines, so don't be surprised if you get a telephone call from John when he's on layover in your town!

Do you have news to share with your Camp Waupaca friends?  Wedding?  Bar Mitzvah?  Hernia operation??  Send us your news and we'll post it right here for everyone to see!

Forever and forever, Waupaca!
