We have long discussed creating a complete roster of everyone - staff, campers - everybody! The first results are now available on our website. CLICK HERE to go to this page. Lots to read before the lists will make sense. MOST IMPORTANTLY, there is a document with a lot of questions due to discrepancies. We can really use your help in resolving some of these questions.
Contact Mike Lurie with any updates: mike.lurie00@gmail.com.
Hi everyone. On March 1st of this year, we changed web hosting services in an effort to save money. Everything seemed to be working OK, until I found recently that the Name & Address update and the Photo Information update processes were not working. I am so sorry about this.
I have been working for several days to get this issue resolved, and I am pleased to report that everything is working just fine now! However, if you submitted a Name & Address update or a Photo Information update since March 1st of this year, please resend the updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
As we have done for almost 3 decades now, we are planning our annual gathering of alumni to meet in Waupaca from Wednesday August 6 to Monday August 11. Come for some or all of the fun! We will reminisce, tell tall tales, and just have a good time romping around Waupaca. The big highlight of this trip will be going to camp on Saturday August 9! We will have our usual lunch at the top of the waterfront, and then have our annual council meeting at the horseshoe. This year, we have also arranged for an evening visit to have a campfire to celebrate the life of Wayne Towne at the top of the waterfront. Here is our official itinerary:
A celebration of life for Wayne Towne will be held on Saturday May 31, 2025, at 1:00 PM CDT at Legend Lake Lodge, N1024 Old South Branch Road, Keshena Wisconsin. The family has invited Wayne's Camp Waupaca family to attend this event. They have also indicated that Camp Waupaca was an important part of Wayne's life, and they hope some CW alumni will attend.
We are also working with CYJ to have a campfire on Saturday August 9, at camp, for our own celebration of the life of Wayne Towne. Lots of stories and tales will be offered as a tribute to Wayne's decades of service to Camp Waupaca For Boys. Wayne was at camp from 1956 - 1981, serving both Skipper Kuklin and Manny Desnet. Stay tuned to this website and our Facebook page for further news about this event later this summer.
Hi everyone. For several months now, I have been working on creating an all encompassing roster of attendance at Camp Waupaca. I started with the 1970s, as that may be the decade for which we have the most data. The file is in MS Excel format. You can filter the list any way you want. If you can help us fill in some blanks, like what cabin someone was in, please let us know! I look forward to hearing your comments!! I will work on the 1980s next. But we don't have nearly the volume of alphabetic and cabin lists from the 1980s to go by. CLICK HERE to open the file.
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Wayne Towne (1956-1982). Wayne passed away early Friday morning, January 10th. We believe that Wayne Towne holds the record as the longest serving staff member at camp, a full 27 seasons. Wayne was the tripping director, a repair man, a story teller, car & bus mechanic, rifle instructor - you name it, Wayne did it!
We extend our condolences to Wayne's widow Rae (she was a cook at camp for many years) and daughters Cyndi and Tammi (both served as kitchen girls at one time). A memorial service is planned for the spring. RIP Wayne, you have left a wonderful legacy for Camp Waupaca For Boys!
John Rosenberg (1963-1967 from Omaha, NE) has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, which is a blood cancer. His treatments are being done in coordination with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. We are hopeful for a positive result. You can read about John's journey at www.caringbridge.org.
When you arrive at the CaringBridge website, go into the search box and type in John Rosenberg and press enter. There are 2 John Rosenberg's on this site. Our John Rosenberg is the one with a photo. Click on his picture and you will be directed to a privacy page. You will need approval from John's wife to enter the site. When you ask for approval, you must make a reference to "Waupaca" in the "Message (optional)" box for her to see your connection.
The CWRG conducts an annual meeting each year, pursuant to our establiehd by-laws. This year, the meeting was held on Saturday August 24th, at the Horseshoe of our beloved Camp Waupaca. The minutes of this meeting are posted on our website, and you can see them by CLICKING HERE. Our thanks to newly appointed scribe Scott Rubin-Asch for such a detailed document!
WOW!! We had no idea that 15 alumni along with 8 guests would show up in Waupaca on August 24th! This is by far the BIGGEST off-year reunion turnout we have EVER had! By far the best part of the day was having Wayne Towne and his family at camp, including wife Rae and daughter Cyndi who both also worked at camp. Wayne transplanted some trees around the horseshow some time in the 1980s to provide some needed shade after other trees had died. Wayne worked at camp from 1956 to 1982, and was an occasional "weekend warrior" after that.
We have updated our "Reunion Wrap-up" page to include lots of photos and videos taken over the course of the event, which started on Wednesday August 21st in the Wisconsin Dells, with Paul Warshauer and Mike Lurie recreating an Early Bird trip! CLICK HERE to go directly to the 2024 reunion page!
Unfortunately, we have more sad news to share. Camp nurse Maxine Greenstein (1979-1984) passed away August 8th. We received this note from her son and former camper Danny Greenstein: "Maxine Greenstein passed on yesterday. She very much enjoyed spending time with working at Camp Waupaca. She will be buried in San Diego as she already was residing in CA and my brother resides in San Diego. Obit to follow."
We extend our condolences to husband Dr. Bob, and sons (and former campers) Danny and Josh. As we learn more, we will provide obituary information where everyone can leave a message for the family. In her honor, "Remember to drink LOTS of water, boys!"
We are sad to report that David Weiner (1951-1953) passed away last night. Dave and his family left quite a legacy for all of us to enjoy at Camp Waupaca! We have already created a web page dedicated to David and his Camp Waupaca legacy. CLICK HERE to go to this page.
CLICK HERE to visit David's obituary and to sign the guest book.Let's send David off in Camp Waupaca style! Take a moment to sing the camp song (which David wrote!) out loud today!! Rest In Peace, David Weiner.
Lew Klein (1964-1973) posted 4 new-to-us cabin photos from 1965-1968! We have done our best to identify as many campers and staff in these pictures as we can, but we could use some help. Here are direct links to the 4 photos. Please take a look and provide any feedback using the link contained on that page:
1965 - what cabin number is this? Can you identify anyone in this photo? Our annual summer get together is planned for Wednesday August 21 through Monday August 26. We will spend a day/night in the Wisconsin Dells (Gregg Feinstein you asked for it, you got it!). Then it's off to Waupaca on Thursday August 22 for several days of fun and remeniscing. And there is a mystery Camp Waupaca artifact we will be retrieving from a resident of Waupaca who rescued it during a home clean out!
On Saturday August 24, we will spend part of the day at camp! If you are able and willing, you are welcome to come and hang out from late morning to late afternoon! We will bring in our own lunch to eat at the top of the waterfront. Then we will conduct our annual council meeting at the Horseshoe! Come for some or all of the days - or maybe just Saturday to see camp! Here is our itinerary for the gathering:
It has been a while since we've had an online reunion! Join us this Sunday, May 26, at 10:30 AM CDT, for an online reunion with all your friends from Camp Waupaca! Come at the start or join any time in the hour from 10:30 - 11:30. Stay for the entire event or leave when you want to. All are welcome!
UPDATE 6/13/2024:
Here is who was on the Zoom call: Paul Warshauer, Mike Lurie, Dick Garb, Alan Edelman, Larry Schneider, Rick Passman, David Ehrlich, John Rosenberg, Errol Grisard, and Larry Lifson. We are excited to announce our plans for a visit to Waupaca later this summer. This year we will start our festivities in the Wisconsin Dells! We will ride The Original Wisconsin Ducks, take old time photos downtown, and dine at Ishnala! Gregg Feinstein - your dream has come true! Hope you can make it!! We have never had a Feinstein at any sort of waupaca reunion.
Here is the current itinerary:
Sometimes we add content and forget to publicize it, so here is a rundown of recent updates, complete with links to go directly to the content:

Our annual trip to Waupaca is in the books! Several men came to eat, drink, tour camp, and tell tall tales. Here's who attenced: Paul Warshauer, Mike Lurie, Rick Passman, George Lamm, Warren Metzdorff (accompanied by his lovely wife Anna), Scott Hershman, and Wayne Towne (we visited the ailing Wayne and his wife Rae Renee at his home in Keshena). We ate like kings during our visit, eating at local establishments such as Simpson's Restaurant (3 times!), Little Fat Gretchen's, Waupaca Woods Restaurant, Wheelhouse, and Clearwater Harbor. The highlight of our visit was spending several hours at camp, thanks to new CYJ Director, Rabbi Hannah Wallick. We ate lunch at the top of the waterfront, then held our annual council meeting at the Horseshoe. After the meeting, we spent a few more hours walking around camp and reminiscing. Please consider joining us next year!
We don't often get mail at reunion HQ, and even more rare to receive a donation (especially when we're not asking). So when it happens, it's a pleasant surprise! Our thanks to Dan Feingold (1969-1971) for this note along with a donation towards our reunion activities. Many thanks, camper!
Our annual trip is less than 2 weeks away! We will gather at all our favoite spots in Waupaca to eat, drink, reminisce, AND spend a day at camp on Saturday August 12! Here is our official itinerary (subject to major or minor changes, with or without notice):
As hoped, the mystery box opening was MUCH better than when Geraldo Rivera unlocked the mystery contents of Al Capone's vault!! First, we would like to identify the mystery donor of the boxes. A BIG Camp Waupaca "thank you" to Rick Passman (1963-1976) for this generous contribution to our archves. Contents of the box included: framed cabin photos, 3 of which we did NOT have on our website, framed all-camp pictures, yearbooks, personal certificates of achievement while at camp, clipboards by year with all sorts of program related documents, and a stack of old "Picture Post" newspapers!
Check back here often as we add new content. Here is a list of the updates so far (click on each link to go directly to the page contents):

We have received two very large, very heavy boxes at reunion HQ in Minnesota, from a mystery alumnus! We will be unpacking these boxes and sharing the contents with everyone, along with the identity of the contributor, on Saturday July 22nd from 10:30 AM to Noon CDT. Viewing details will be coming soon. Mark your calendars! We promise this will be more exciting than when Geraldo Rivera unlocked the mystery contents of Al Capone's vault!!
It is with great sadness that we inform everyone of the death of Mike Euer (1969-1988). Mike started on the waterfront, and ended up as the Assistant Camp Director to Manny Desnet. Mike was a fantastic administrator and a great spirit in running the camp day to day. Mike's entire family was involved in camp life. His wife Georgia Euer was a presence in the office, and a frequent yearbook resource. His children David and Elizabeth were always partaking in events at camp. Georgia passed away in 1997.
We extend our condolences to David and Elizabeth on their loss. Please visit Mike's obituary and leave a message of condolence for the family. CLICK HERE to go to the obituary site.
Our annual trek to Waupaca is scheduled! We have reserved a block of rooms at the Comfort Suites in Waupaca. I think there is just 1 room left! We also have an arrangement to visit camp on Saturday August 12 for a few hours starting at noon with lunch at the top of the waterfront, followed by our annual board meeting at 1 PM at the Horseshoe! Make your plans now, and let either Mike Lurie or Paul Warshauer know that you will be joining us. Little Ricky Passman is already excited to walk from the Old Beach to the current beach along the Old Beach Trail!!
We have been very fortunate for the last 8 years to enjoy a cordial relationship with recent CYJ directors. From Noah Gallagher to Robin Anderson, they have been very generous and allowed a group of hard-core campers/staff to visit camp for a few hours each summer. These visits usually include lunch at the top of the waterfront, our annual board meeting at the Horseshoe, and then a tour of camp and buildings.
With the retirement of Robin Anderson at the end of the 2022 camping season, we were anxious to meet her replacement to introduce ourselves, and to request a day at camp later this summer. On January 30, Paul Warshauer and Mike Lurie held a 45 minute video conference with Rabbi Hannah Wallick, the new CYJ director. She has a unique vision of the camp, the buildings and grounds, and how to retain staff. It was a wonderful meeting, and we set a date for this summers' visit to camp on Saturday August 12!
Welcome Hannah, we look forward to many years of visits to camp under your leadership and generosity!
Have you noticed we're updating some of our pages on the website? Eventually we will get them all updated, but it will take time. The "crazy font" you are seeing is called Brush Script MT. This font was used by Manny Desnet on stationary and the eagle Camp Waupaca t-shirts. We're just incorporating it into our website to pay homage.
We have also made some behind-the-scenes changes which will allow us to quickly and easily change the footer on our web pages to indicate our copyright years. It was a pain in the rear to change every web page to show the new year! Now your webmaster can wake up on January 1st of every year and make one small change and then all the web pages are updated immediately!
Do you have any other suggestions for our website? Let us know!!
The reunion pages have been neglected for too long, and now we have made several updates. We have added reunion pages for 2015 and 2016. The look and feel have been updated, too. So click on the "Reunion Wrap-Up" link to the left (under "Past Reunions") and take a look!
We have been digitizing any and all videos we have in our possession and adding them to our website. Click on the "Videos" link to the left and start exploring what we have. We will be uploading more and more videos in the coming weeks, so check back often.
Do you have any videos of camp? Maybe your parents took videos on parent's day and they are sitting around? Send us your digitized videos and we will be glad to upload them and feature them on our videos page!
At a special board meeting held on November 22, 2022, your Board of Directors seated our 11th board member, Norm Rose (1959-1960). We were lacking representation from the 1950s and Norm graciously accepted our invitation to be on the board. Also at this meeting, we discussed a new reunion format at camp - more coming next year as we know more!

Our annual get together in Waupaca is history! There were 5 alumni in attendance: Errol Grisard (1972-1972), Mike Lurie (1970-1981), Warren Metzdorff (1971-1988), Rick Passman (1963-1976), and Paul Warshauer (1966-1988, give or take). We did not follow our rigorously planned itinerary, but it didn't matter. We were in Waupaca, visited a lot of our old haunts, and spent a fantastic Saturday at camp! We stayed in a different hotel this year, the Comfort Suites at Par 4 Resort, as the Ramada has fallen on hard times and is no longer to our liking. Besides, we miss our old friend Julie Miller, who always looked after us when we stayed there.
Since our first reunion at camp in 1996, we have always had merchandise for people to buy. Mostly hats and t-shirts and sweatshirts, we did have some polo shirts one year, and we added a hooded sweashirt in 2021. These items usually commemorate a particular anniversary, like in 2001, we recognized the 50th anniversary of the first summer of Camp Waupaca For Boys.
We have excess merchandise which really needs to be sold! We have items from 1996, 1998, 2016, and 2021. We also have some extra 2022 retro Camp Waupaca t-shirts. Make us an offer! Everything must go!! Please reach out to Mike Lurie at 763-464-4872 if you are interested in any of the following items:

We asked a simple question: would anyone want a reprint of the old CAMP WAUPACA t-shirt. The response was overwhelming! The first order was for 56 shirts, and a subsequent order was just placed for another 40 shirts, incuding toddler and youth sizes! We asked for people to model their new shirts, and here is what we have so far:
Two weeks behind, but here are the entries: 1974 cabin 7, and 1981 cabin 2 (first 4 weeks)
CLICK ON THE IMAGES BELOW to be taken directly to the webpage with the photo and names. The "hover feature" is enabled on this photo! Just move the mouse pointer to any face, and it will tell you the row and position number, and the name of the person.
Be sure to come back each week for the "Sunday photo of the week" and help us fill in the missing names!
What an amazing turnout for the Chicago get together on Saturday October 30th, 2021 at Max & Benny's in Chicago! We're still putting together pictures from the event, but every decade was represented. Stay tuned for more! Our sincerest thanks to Larry Gordon for making all the arrangements.
Our thanks to Alan Edelman for bringing this photo to the reunion in Chicago! It has been added to our website under 1984. There are quite a few names missing, so please send them along.

Our recent reunion was a success!! From having 4 new attendees, to providing our own food (except for breakfast), everyone had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect, Lake Stratton looked awesome, and we all had such a good time.
As usual, we have a reunion page dedicated to pictures, videos, names, and a time capsule that summarizes events leading up to, and during the weekend. You can find this page by clicking on "Reunion Wrap-up" button to the left, or by CLICKING HERE to go directly to the page.
We took advantage of our get together at camp to record our camp song, sung by actual members of Camp Waupaca!! You can go to our song page by clicking on the "All Camp Songs" button to the left. At the top of the page is a link to listen to the camp song.
Mike Lurie, with permission, was allowed to visit camp on March 6, and again on April 1 with Paul Warshauer. The purpose of these videos was to announce and advertise the 2021 reunion the last weekend of August. We did Facebook Live videos from Camp Waupaca! If you missed the videos live, we have them here for you to watch:
During our most recent visit to Waupaca, Paul Warshauer and Mike Lurie made a visit to the studios of WILW, 96.3 FM in Waupaca, to discuss the history of camp, what life was like at camp, and our upcoming reunion plans. Our thanks to Wayne Netzler for inviting us to record in the studio with him! Click on the pic below to listen to the recording.
Over the years, people have said things, and over time, they achieve legendary status and are repeated amongst ourselves or at camp gatherings. In a spurt of creativity, we decided to create a page dedicated to these famous quotes. Suggestions are still pouring in, so we will contiue to update this list. CLICK HERE to see the current list.
Did you remember/know that each cabin had an Indian name? Excuse me, Native American name. We dug up a cabin list from our archives, and here we present to you the cabins with their Native American names. Here is the list:
Cabin 1 | Apache | Cabin 9 | Oneida |
Cabin 2 | Sioux | Cabin 10 | Chippewa |
Cabin 3 | Cherokee | Cabin 11 | Navajo |
Cabin 5 | Iroquois | Cabin 12 | Winnebago |
Cabin 6 | Shawnee | Cabin 14 | Cheyenne |
Cabin 7 | Mohawk | Cabin 15 | Arapaho |
Cabin 8 | Mohican | Cabin CITs | Shmohawks |
We have been making lots of changes and additions to the website in the last few weeks. Our recent get together in the Sleepy Eye MN headquarters of the CWRG was dedicated to making these updates. Here is a list of just some of the recent changes (click on the available links to be taken directly to the page):
In the early days of our website, we had a feature that would display the row and position number and the name of a person when you would hover your mouse pointer over a face. This feature was rolled out for cabin and all-camp photos only. The info would be displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window. The years have rolled on, and this feature was removed from most browsers. Through a little research by your webmaster, we have been able to re-institute that feature! Now when you hover over a face, the row and position and name will appear right where the mouse pointer rests. Please note that this feature is not yet rolled out to all cabin and all-camp photos. As of right now, ALL cabin and all-camp photos from 1954-1962 have this feature implemented. And some photos in the 1970s do, too. It takes time to map all the faces and write the code, so be patient. In the meantime, we hope you go back to view these photos and help us identify EVERYONE! There are still a lot of question marks (?) on these photos. Here is what the feature will look like:
Due to the current COVID-19 status in the Waupaca area, we were unable to gather together for the first time since 1996. Instead, we adapted to our current reality by conducting our annual board meeting on ZOOM! We had 15 people attend
We have updated the camp songs page to include the song "This Summer Was Ours", sung at the final banquet each summer. To visit our songs page, CLICK HERE.
We have come across a complete copy of the 1988 "Super Relay" program. Many of us remember it being called the"Super Duper Relay". Please note number of named events, including "Bob Mowen Lucky Horseshoe Event", "Rick Poole South End Director Event", "Craig Clotiaux 'Fill up them trash barrels' Event", "Joe Hecht Golden Arrow Event", "Craig Fuller Temper Tantrum Eent", "Where is Wayne Towne when you need him event", and finally the "Dick Garb Hidden Wasp Nest Event". CLICK HERE to view the Super Duper Relay event program!
One of the unique aspects of Camp Waupaca was going home on the bus with a yearbook fresh off the presses! Articles on every class activity, letters from Manny Desnet and Mike Euer and the Camp Nurse. There was an extensive section of statistics from Competition and Tribes and the Olympics and even a fresh recap of the Blue & White War! There was a section of cabin articles and special programs. And there were lots and lots of picture pages.
When we started this website, we created a page dedicated to Yearbook Covers. There have been discussions about digitizing all the yearbooks, and we have started that activity. We have renamed the "Yearbook Covers" page to just "Yearbooks". This will reflect the change to include the actual yearbooks. Our first effort is 1966 and 1967. CLICK HERE to be taken directly to the Yearbooks page. We are also cross-listing the yearbooks within the Photo Archive pages as well.
At long last, the missing video tapes from the Paul Warshauer collection have been located! We are in the process of doing some test digitizing of a couple of tapes. With any luck, we can recapture such notable acts as "Shuzbutt The Revolution" and "Mel's Shoe Palace" and other lost treasures! Stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks.
We also will be making available for sale some of the reunion videos which were digitized last year. Stay tuned for info on how you can purchase these on a flash drive.
Thinking of visiting camp any time soon? Remember: Please do NOT go onto Camp Young Judaea (our old Camp Waupaca) property. We will have another on site reunion when the younger former campers get off their butts and organize one!
